van den Bergh 152

vdB152

Van den Bergh 152, also known as Cederblad 201, is the blue reflection nebula located at the center of this image. The dark nebula stretching from vdB152 to the bottom of the image is Barnard 175, a cloud of interstellar dust. This complex is located nearly 1,400 light years distant in the direction of the constellation of Cepheus.

The interstellar dust scatters light from the embedded bright star embedded in the nebula giving parts of the nebula a blueish color. Ultraviolet light from the star is also thought to cause a dim reddish luminescence in the nebular dust. This embedded star has probably not formed within the nebula as its measured velocity is very different from the cloud's velocity.
